Prevent Chimney Fires
With proper chimney care, chimney fires are preventable. However, while fire prevention is always a major concern, unseen blockages can also prevent proper draft ventilation, thereby decreasing the efficiency of your fireplace and increasing your risk of smoke entering the home.
Creosote Removal
The black shiny buildup inside your chimney is called creosote, and it is highly flammable. It is created when substances off from burning wood exit the fireplace or wood stove and flow up the chimney. As the hot smoke travels through the relatively cooler chimney, condensation occurs and creosote is formed, clinging to the chimney walls. Certain conditions tend to encourage the build-up of creosote, such as a restricted air supply, burning unseasoned wood, lower temperature fires, and a cooler-than-normal chimney.
Annual Inspections
Many people don’t know if they need to have their chimney cleaned, so an annual inspection and cleaning are recommended. Air Quality Services also recommends having your chimney cleaned when you have just moved into a home, as you don’t know the cleaning or use history of the chimney. If you are uncertain as to whether you need a cleaning, it is better to err on the side of safety and have your chimney checked.
